Fera (Werewolf: the Apocalypse)

Originally, there were a number of other races in the world, all created by Gaia for different purposes. These were collectively known as Fera -- the Changing Breeds. The Garou waged war on them during what became known as the War of Rage, and it gummed up relations between the wolves and the rest ever since.

* Ajaba: Were-hyenas.
* Ananasi: Were-spiders, the children of Queen Ananasa, created to defend the earth against triatic imbalances. Secretive, but quite numerous. They serve Wyld, Weaver and the Balance Wyrm.
* Bastet: Werecats, the Bastet were created to be Gaia's eyes. Alive, though suffering the loss of their feral kin.
* Corax: Were-ravens, created to be Gaia's messengers. Quite alive.
* Garou: Werewolves. While the Garou were originally created as Gaia's warriors, they have had to take up the slack created by the destruction of the other changing breeds. Quite alive.
* Gurahl: Were-bears, created to heal Gaia. Alive and active in the triple digits, hibernating uselessly in four.
* Kitsune: Were-foxes, created to understand magic. Quite alive. The 'tricksters of asia.' (See also kitsune.)
*Mokolé: Were-reptiles, created to serve as Gaia's memory. Quite alive in tropical regions, many hibernating like the bears.
*Nagah: Were-snakes, created to judge for Gaia. Very much alive, and the only breed with fertile metis. The West believes them dead, the East know otherwise (and they aren't telling.)
*Nuwisha: Were-coyotes, so Gaia could laugh. Quite alive, but very secretive. Unparalleled masters of the Spirit World.
*Ratkin: Were-rats, created to cull humanity. One of the few Fera to be active in Antarctica. Quite alive.
*Rokea: Were-sharks, created to protect the seas, given the mandate only to survive. Quite alive.

Note: The Ajaba, while technically werehyenas, are Bastet and not a distinct or separate changing breed, but are once included with the tribes of Bastet. Black sheep, yes. Different, no. Just as the Zhong Lung are an asian stream(tribe) of Mokolé. Same species, different branch. To make them distinct as separate Fera would mean you'd have to add every other tribe of Bastet and Gurahl, and all four streams of Mokole.

Extinct Fera
A few shifter breeds no longer exist in W:tA, due to the War of Rage or simple bad luck.

* Apis: Were-bulls, the Apis were in charge of the earth and agriculture. Long dead; the last known Apis was the famed Minotaur in Greece.
* Camazotz: Were-bats. They were created to be Gaia's voice during the night hours. Much like a night version of the Corax. However, the Shadow Lords believed that they were wyrm-fallen, and wiped them out.
* Grondr: Were-boars. Landscapers and preventative land medicine of Gaia. Bears were the healers of people and beings, pigs were meant to devour the despoiling corruption. Guarded the Gurahl in the War of Rage, died by doing so.

The Cougar (Puma concolor, formerly Felis concolor), also known as a puma, mountain lion, catamount and panther, is a medium-sized feline (typically 8 feet [2.5 meters] long and 150 pounds [70 kilos] in weight for males, with females being somewhat smaller), which are native to North, Central, and South America, and they sport a sandy-brown fur, with distinctive black and white facial markings along with a black tail tip. It is a large cat native to the Americas, second only in size to the stockier jaguar. They are not technically grouped with the "true" big cats, as they are slightly smaller than other big cats, and they lack the vocal physiology to roar.

Etymology
The word cougar is borrowed from the Portuguese çuçuarana, via French; which was initially derived from the extinct Brazilian Tupi language. Puma is the most commonly used name in Latin America and most parts of Europe. The term puma is also sometimes used in the United States. The first use of puma in English dates to 1777, introduced from Spanish from the Quechua language. In the western United States and Canada, it is also called "mountain lion", a name first used in writing in 1858. Other names include "panther" (although it does not belong to the genus Panthera) and "catamount" (meaning "cat of the mountains").

Jaguar

2023-11-29T09:40:17Z

2601:18D:4700:72A0:E492:E678:CA05:F9F3:

Jaguar is the common name of Panthera onca, a big cat of Central and South America and the largest cat native to the Americas, along with the cougar. It is arguably the most impressive carnivorous mammal of the western hemisphere (not counting extinct forms), being larger and stockier even than the Old World leopard, with a shorter tail and larger head. Its coat bears a similar spotted marking to that of the leopard but with larger rosettes with spots, and a melanistic or black phase, sometimes commonly called a panther, is also known to exist.

The jaguar figured heavily in the religions of Central American peoples such as the Maya, where it was associated with the god of war.

As of this writing, out of the 52 species (including "other") represented on pounced.org, the jaguar is in the lower 20th percentile in popularity as a phenotype.

The jaguar's powerful bite allows it to pierce the carapaces of turtles and tortoises, and to employ an unusual killing method: it bites directly through the skull of mammalian prey between the ears to deliver a fatal blow to the brain.

Diet and behavior
The jaguar is a carnivore and apex predator. The jaguar is an ambush predator, it will slowly walk down forest paths in search of food. It preys on capybara, anteaters, deer, peccaries, armadillos, agoutis, tapirs, and reptiles like turtles, tortoises, lizards, caimans and crocodiles. Jaguars are also good swimmers, which also aids in their hunts.

The species holds the Guinness record for the animal with the greatest number of names, with over 40 in English alone.<ref>Mammal with the most names entry on the Guinness' website. Puma is the most commonly used name in Latin America and most parts of Europe. The term puma is also sometimes used in the United States. The first use of puma in English dates to 1777, introduced from Spanish from the Quechua language.[12] In the western United States and Canada, it is also called "mountain lion", a name first used in writing in 1858. Other names include "panther" (although it does not belong to the genus Panthera) and "catamount" (meaning "cat of the mountains").

Diet
Like most other members of the cat family, the cougar is a carnivore. It preys on deer, elk, moose, guanacos, vicuñas, mountain goats and bighorn sheep. It can also take down other prey such as rodents, lagomorphs, raccoons, birds, and peccaries.

Leopard

2023-11-29T09:00:40Z

2601:18D:4700:72A0:E492:E678:CA05:F9F3:

Leopards (Panthera pardus) are one of the five 'big cats' of the genus Panthera (the others are the lion, tiger, jaguar, and snow leopard). There are 10 subspecies of leopard. Leopards are native to Africa and parts of Asia.

Leopards, Jaguars and Black panthers
Leopards are noted for their short sleek coat that varies greatly from pale straw, golden, and gray buff to bright, deep ochre and chestnut, tawny or light yellow in warm, dry habitats to a darker, reddish-orange and sometimes black (found mostly in wetter, dense forests). Large black spots grouped into rosettes on the shoulders, upper arms, back, flanks and haunches, and smaller scattered spots on the lower limbs, head, throat and chest, and the belly has large black blotches. They are also considered the most dangerous species among felines caused by their unpredictable and aggressive character. This large cat is sometimes confused in appearance with the South American jaguar, but the leopard though is small, less stocky and unlike the jaguar, its rosette markings are generally smaller and have no internal spots with smaller heads and longer tails. Jaguars are also generally shaped like tigers, but of course this can only be found out by very close examination. All black or melanistic leopards, sometimes commonly called ‘Black panthers’, are born in the same litter as normally marked cats and also carry the rosette markings, although these are masked by the darkness of the fur.

Diet and behavior
Like most other members of the cat family, leopards are carnivores. Their prey consists of antelopes, deer, zebras, monkeys, black-backed jackals, bat-eared foxes, and genets. They are also skillful tree climbers, and they will often haul their kills up into a tree, to keep them out of reach of other carnivores.

Subspecies
There are 10 subspecies of leopard, along with their scientific names and habitat, are the following:

* Panthera pardus pardus - African leopard
* Panthera pardus fusca - Indian leopard
* Panthera pardus adersi - Zanzibar leopard (extinct)
* Panthera pardus japonensis - North-Chinese leopard
* Panthera pardus tulliana - Persian leopard
* Panthera pardus melas - Javan leopard
* Panthera pardus nimr - Arabian leopard
* Panthera pardus orientalis - Amur leopard
* Panthera pardus delacouri - Indochinese leopard
* Panthera pardus kotiya - Sri Lankan leopard
