A hybrid (biology-wise) is the offspring resulting from combining the qualities of two organisms of different breeds, varieties, species, or genera through sexual reproduction ("crosses").

Etymology
The term hybrid is derived from the Latin hybrida, used for crosses such as a tame sow and a wild boar. The term came into popular use in English in the 19th century, though examples of its use have been found from the early 17th century.

Conspicuous hybrids are popularly identified with portmanteau names, starting in the 1920s with the breeding of a tiger/lion hybrids (ligers and tigons).

Description
Generally, it means that each cell has the genetic material from two different organisms, whereas an individual where some cells are derived from a different organism is called a chimera. Hybrids are not always intermediated between their parents (such as in blending inheritance), but can show hybrid vigor, sometimes growing larger or taller than either parent.

The concept of a hybrid is interpreted differently in animal and plant breeding, where there is interest in the individual parentage. In genetics, attention is focused on the numbers of chromosomes, while in taxonomy, a key question is how closely related the parent species are.

Based on their "parent" lineage, hybrids themselves can be fecund (Dzomo) or sterile (Dzo).

Hybrid and furry
Furry characters, fursonas, or OCs, can be, as the same as in mainstream culture, hybrids of two biologically possible animal crosses, such as a coyote and a wolf, commonly identified as a coywolf, resulting in ligers, wolfdogs, coydogs, and tigons, among others.

But thanks to ideas/imagination not being impeded by logical biology, furry variations in hybridization are limitless, regardless of actual fertility facts. So, while authors can/have created characters in scenarios where they abided by mainstream genetics, crosses of every possible variation are present in the fandom thanks to its creative community. This includes crosses between:

* Actual "biological cousins" - Such as a fox and a wolf, commonly identified in the furry fandom as a folf (or pholph).
* Between not related biological species - Which can not interbreed, such as a tiger and a skunk, this cross popularized by furry artist Max Black Rabbit's popular character, Zig Zag. Other species such animals crossbreed with include reptiles, birds, insects or fish.
* Between heterotrophs and autotrophs - Plants and animals.
* Synthetic biology with organic lifeforms - Like xenobots with any animal (like primagens, but not anthroids or inanimorphs). Wolfwere variants (animal to human) do exist but are extremely rare in furry lore.
* Monster hybrids - The crosses between inhuman creatures, such as a werewolf/vampire hybrid do occur in the fandom, but are more common in mainstream culture (sometimes referred to as werepires or vaewolfves<ref>Werewolf-Vampire Hybrids page on the BloodRayne & Mia Wiki. Bears are rather uncommon in modern furry culture, compared to their mythological importance. Bear fursonas are commonly adopted by large individuals (often with size fetishes) or Native American furries.

Anthropomorphic bears are common in artwork and literature. One of the most famous anthropomorphic bears in the world is Winnie the Pooh. Other examples include Goldilocks and the Three Bears, as well as the popular children's series Berenstain Bears.

Furry fans of transformation and animal totems enjoy the movie Brother Bear, in which an Inuit man, Kenai must deal with transforming into the animal he hates the most -- a bear -- while simultaneously gaining an unwanted 'brother'.

Bears are the most common commercial plushies, marketed as the teddy bear.

Fictional species of Bear include the Cave Bear in Dungeons & Dragons.
* Illiop, a fictional species best known to the public through Ken Forsse's character Teddy Ruxpin

Smokey Bear is a mascot that promotes prevention of forest fires.

Berserker
Berserker (literally bear-shirt in Old Norse) comes from the old Norwegian term berserkr (plural berserkir) refers to Norse champions who donned themselves in bear fur as recognition. Nowadays the term is used either to describe a warrior fighting with great rage or when a person turns blid by the rage (going berserk).

Berserker were said to wear bear-skins or wolf-skins, which gave them the ability to transform into these animals.fact
