The giraffe is a species of hooves herbivore in the genus Giraffa of the family Giraffidae which lives on the African plains and savannah, consisting of two species and nine subspecies, most of which are threatened. It has an extraordinarily long neck, as well as the long, purple tongue which it uses in order to strip leaves off of the large Acacia trees for its sustenance. They have prominent horn-like structures called ossicones, which are formed from ossified cartilage, covered in skin and fused to the skull at the parietal bones. One of the giraffe's few close relatives in the animal kingdom is the okapi.

In the furry fandom, giraffes are less common than many other species.
