The Honeycomb

24.6.58.84: /* Concept */

The Honeycomb is an online role-playing group based on Richard Adams' novel Watership Down.

The group is prose-based, with each participant writing about their own characters in an ever-continuing story. New characters generally arrive as "hlessil" (wandering rabbits) who join the warren.

* Address: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thehoneycomb/
* Ran from/to: 1998 - present

Concept
The action takes place at Watership Down Warren, the setting from the original novel ("The Honeycomb" was the name given to the large, meeting-place burrow of the warren).

The group's story began about five years after the end of the original novel. Most of the novel's characters had passed away, and the warren was now led by new characters Marigold-rah (daughter of novel character Blackavar), and her mate, Captain Trefoil, who are still in charge in 2008.

The Efrafan Captain Campion and a few other characters from the original novel have been played and/or designated as parents of some of the new characters, while other characters had entirely original backgrounds.

A second warren has also been played on the club since 1999: Stonetunnel Warren, which up until recently was the long-running main rival of Watership Down. It is run by the morally complex seer ("veheer") Sundew-rah and his outright sadistic mate, Captain Orchid.

Plotlines
Plotlines generally revolve around the dangers the rabbits face, such as predators ("elil"), as well as tyrants attempting to seize control of or destroy the warren (echoing General Woundwort, the despotic villain of the original novel).

There are also generally more personal/emotional plotlines going on at the same time, involving such things as friendships or romantic relationships between the characters.

The main plotline as of October 2008 involves an especially powerful seer ("veheer") hare named Mercury-rah, who has used his ability to seize control of other rabbits' bodies to take over Watership Down. Mercury and his followers are being battled by an uneasy alliance of Watership and Stonetunnel rabbits.

Brent M. Parker, also known as Animagusurreal, is a furry artist based in Central California that is known for his psychedelic and - as his name suggests - surreal techniques. His subjects are usually tigers and other big cats or artwork featuring a superhero known as Remi Vitoux.

Remi
Remi Vitoux is a beaver furry created by Animagusurreal, he lives in New Orleans and is sensitive and rebellious artist who specializes in wood sculpture (being a beaver of course). Little does everyone know though, Remi is also the superhero "Damnation" who uses his wood-sculpting and dam-building powers to fight the forces of evil... a strange and surreal superhero fitted for a strange and surreal line of artwork.

Camo
Another occurring theme is a series of feral tigers done for a graphic novel Camo. The tigers are from India but possess magic powers and can transport to a number of places around the world.

As of November 2006, after months of creating concept art of the characters, Parker has begun posting actual pages of the graphic novel on his website, as well as his various web galleries.

Camo: a magical tiger odyssey is a graphic novel-in-progress currently being created by Brent M. Parker, a.k.a. Animagusurreal. Anthropomorphisization is about on the level of The Lion King - the characters are sentient, but are quadrupeds, live in the wild, and do not wear clothes or use technology. Early pages are available for viewing on his website.

Premise
Camo is a middle-aged tiger living on an island in a river in the Indian jungle with his three nearly-grown cubs, whom - contrary to general male tiger behavior - he has raised. He constantly wards off invasions of his territory by rival tigers - including his ambitious young Neighbor - with nothing more than his calm, confident presence.

Camo's only son, Young Camo ("Y.C.") is a rare white tiger, which makes it more difficult for him to blend into his surroundings. Camo insists that the happy-go-lucky Y.C. toughen up in order to compensate for this disadvantage, and the discussion escalates into an argument, and then a fight.

As Camo is about to pounce on Y.C., the younger tiger reflexively uses his hitherto-undiscovered magical powers to send his father to Siberia.

Y.C. embarks upon a quest to find his father, master his powers...and perhaps discover his own territory on the way.

Meanwhile, Camo must learn how to survive in someone else's territory.
