By definition, a hermaphrodite is any of those who exhibit primary sexual organs of both sexes. However, within the furry fandom, a hermaphrodite is often represented as an overtly female figure with male attributes as well as the female. (Male and female primary sexual characteristics but solely female secondary sexual characteristics) There is a thin line in the fandom between Herms and She-males, even though the latter does not meet the above-mentioned criteria.

Variations
There are two other varieties of herms you might find within the fandom, the Male-herm and the androgynous herm. Both of these are rare, though the majority of these characters that do exist are species to which appearing male or androgynous is a predisposition, such as dragons.

The common concept of a hermaphrodite is that they are overly active sexually. While they are overtly sexual figures within the fandom, there are many who are either inactive, or have much deeper reasons for portraying a hermaphroditic character than any kind of sexual fascination.

Although it is common in fandom to shorten "hermaphrodite" to "herm," the abbreviation demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the term. It is formed by a combination of the names of the Greek gods Hermes and Aphrodite, the former being in many ways the epitome of the Greek ideal male just as Aphrodite symbolized the best of the well-rounded female.

Art
Herms are not a very common subject of Furry art, however several artists have delved into the subject matter, some specialising in it.

One famous artist (or infamous, depending on your view) who specializes in Herms of extraordinary proportions is Doug Winger, whose creations have spawned terms such as Winger Girls, Wingeresque and Wingerized.

While Winger is one who will come up in many discussions, many artists such as FoxxFire, Orena, Marc Leonhardt, AraKaraath, and countless others have done works that depict herms ranging from busty babes with manly bulges to the truly androgynous creatures.

Places
Herms can be found in quite a few areas throughout the fandom, including #hermsyiff on (IRC), the Hermaphrodite Haven and Garden of Eden of FurryMUCK, and the like-named location on Tapestries MUCK. Some have been spotted on Second Life as well.
Herms appear in many art sites such as the VCL, FurAffinity, and SheezyArt to name a few.
