SimbaLion aka Steve was born on March 23rd, 1979 in Southfield Michigan. His father is technically minded, while his mother was a painter and sculpter, which has resulted in a wide range of interests both creative and technical.

He currently lives in Chicago, and is studying music theory and composition.

Fandom Involvement
Steve discovered the fandom in 1996, and because he was a fan of Walt Disney's The Lion King, he took on the nickname SimbaLion and created a character to fit.

Having seen large "furry" communities growing in places like Chicago, California, New York, and other major population centers, Steve wondered why a similar community didn't exist in Michigan. Taking matters into his own hands, he created the MIFur mailing list and began hosting regular events. At first it would be a good day if 3-5 people showed up. Within a few years, the community had swelled to the point where it was common for a major party to have 50-60 guests. Today, MIFur is one of the largest "furry" communities in the U.S. and holds big events on a fairly regular basis, including a new convention which began its life in April 2008, Furry Connection North.

Convention Involvement
Steve has been volunteering his time with conventions for many years. Since 2000 he has worked with Midwest FurFest as a member of the security team, and since 2001 he's been working with the Audio and Video department at Anthrocon. He started as a volunteer, was quickly recruited to staff, and promoted to director when the position became available upon Triggur's departure.

In addition to the traditional A/V duties, Steve also coordinates the Anthrocon dances, and books DJ talent. Anthrocon's dances are known for discovering and putting a spotlight on some of the most talented DJs in the furry fandom, and he works each year toward furthering this goal.

MIFur

2008-04-27T23:15:14Z

24.148.21.102:

MIFur is a social group founded in the mid 1990s that consists mainly of fans and lifestylers in Michigan. The group has grown to include those who are from Michigan originally, those who live in neighboring states, or just people who want to talk to other members, know as "MIFurs". The group has an open membership policy, and anyone who wishes to participate in the community is welcome to do so.

Main points of content in the past have been a mailing list maintained by SimbaLion and later Gir Tygrin, and a LiveJournal Community maintaintained by Gir Tygrin, Nik Vulper, and Wildfox.

In April 2007, Gir Tygrin created a website to function as a new main point of contact between furs : MichiganFurs.com. The website is a constant work in progress, currently featuring forums, a chat, an event calendar, photo gallery, and email. The website has grown to include more than 420 members in it's first year of existence.

The largest social gatherings for the MIFur group are monthly furmeets organized by Gir Tygrin. Usual events include dinner at a local restaurant, miniature golf, bowling, or outdoor events at the park. A majority of these events are focused on the Ann Arbor area. Other meets are organized by members and information is posted on the website or livejournal.

In 2008 some members of MIFur decided to organize a Furry Connection North. The inaugural event was held in Ann Arbor on April 11-13, 2008.
