In early 2006, Kamui was contracted to design a logo for Bad Dog Books. The logo was to bring to mind the sleek black premium style of the FANG books that were BDB's flagship product, as well as the gritty, mature energy of BDB's other books.

Working from keywords such as 'dog', 'smoke', 'cool' and 'danger' Kamui came up with several design concepts, finally pitching the two prelimenary logos shown here. The first was deemed too geometric and static, the second too heavily stylized, resembling the visual style of White Wolf, publishers of, among others, the Werewolf line of RPG books.

By fusing the stark geometry of the first with the rough-edged energy of the second,, the final design was achieved. This logo graces all BDB products.

The canine character depicted (also informally known as Jules Reve or, more commonly, as the Bad Dog) is not an existing character or representation thereof.

Bad Dog Books is a publishing house founded by Alex Vance which employs modern print-on-demand technology to publish anthropomorphic fiction.

Originally named Osfer's Joint Publications, its flagship product was FANG, a serial anthology of furry fiction intended to reinvigorate widespread interest in printed anthropomorphic fiction. To emphasize its focus on imagination over imagery, FANG features no artwork whatsoever, with the exception of the iconic BDB logo by Kamui.

Ben Goodridge joined in spring of 2006, as Alex's health did not allow him to continue serving as FANG's editor and when the anthology was restarted in July 2006, Bad Dog Books was created to continue and fdexpand OJP's original vision.

Beside FANG, BDB produces FANG Presents, a line of novels by authors hand-picked by FANG's editors. Currently, one novel by André Blaireau is in print and two more are in development, as well as a number of books by other authors. Before his appointment to the BDB staff, Ben Goodridge had been invited to submit a novel for FANG Presents based on his Arcanum Arcanorum stories, which appeared in FANG Volume 2.

BDB produces its books in paperback, black and white with a full-color cover, in pocket-format, typically for a cover price of $19.99. As of February 2007, BDB's books ara available directly through the Bad Dog Bookstore as well as through FurPlanet. February 2007 also marked the start of the BDB Podcast.

This is more expensive than most paperbacks, which is due to the print-on-demand method of publication. This has a very high unit price, doesn't require the bulk printing and significant initial investment of traditional publishing. This allows BDB a substantial measure of freedom in the products it produces, since there is large initial investment to be made for the mass-printing of any particular book.

It also allows the manufacture of books with a very fast turnaround. FANG was first conceived in June 2005 and was released to the public three months later -- in these three months, a website was created, authors were attracted, submissions were reviewed and later edited, and the book was proofed for printing.

Considering the speed and efficiency of print-on-demand publication and the absence of up-front investments, the actual conversion of a print-ready text into a publishable document is a comparatively swift process, owing primarily to BDB's experience in publishing.

For this reason, BDB offers assisted self-publishing to any interested author. The author is expected to supply all the necessary materials (the text itself, copyright information, cover art, interior and cover copy) and BDB prepares the book and makes it available for sale.

Because royalties are paid out per-sale, the author can elect to grant BDB a portion of each sold copy's royalties in place of a fixed fee, thus making the entire publication process completely free.

BDB is characterized by this freedom from large financial concerns; the risks involved with any particular project are minimal, allowing unusual degrees of freedom and flexibility in the selection of projects.

FurRag is a furry fiction archive which caters to all types and genres of furry fiction. it offers advanced text formatting, multi-chapter story creation, automated word count, and extensive fields for story summaries and authors' notes per story and per chapter. The site is laid out for reading comfort, providing clear, compact controls while maintaining the focus on ease of reading.

History
FurRag was started in 2005 with the goal of being the definitive furry fiction archive, and was dedicated to catering to all tastes and all genres of furry fiction. Rapidly developed and deployed in Beta form in time for the 2005 National Novel Writing Month, development stalled after the coder who'd assisted FurRag's founder, Alex Vance, had to leave the project.

While several attempts were made to develop the archive further, with various people assisting, none bore any conclusive results. Toumal, founder of the Yiffstar archive of primarily erotic furry fiction, offered the use of his site's codebase several times, and Alex passed on several of the features he'd originally planned to implement, some of which have since appeared in Yiffstar (such as the availability of an oekaki-board connected to each story, easier chapter navigation, and a more extensive favorites system).

Features
In April 2007, after several months of working on the project solo, Alex announced that FurRag was now out of Beta. Thoroughly redesigned, the site featured a sleeker interface and expanded functionality. Users can choose to receive e-mail notifications when an update has been made to a story, collection or by an author they've marked as 'favorite' and FurRag now features an integrated review system rather than having an automated bridge to the site's forum, as implemented in the Beta version (the code for this bridge had been provided by Toumal).

Community and 'collections'
With the new site, Alex hopes to improve the community aspect of furry fiction. A particularly significant piece of functionality to achieve this goal is that of the collection. A collection is a set created by a user which can contain any story available on the site, and stories can be part of an unlimited number of collections.

Anyone who finds a collection they're interested in can mark it as a 'favorite' and receive notification whenever a new story is added to it.

Collections can also be made 'open', in which case any reader can add stories to the collection, or 'moderated' which offers the same freedom, but which requires the collection's creator to approve a story's addition to the collection.

The notion is that readers with a particular set of interests will start groups for those interests, and add any story they encounter that's relevant, to those collections. In this way, FurRag avoids requiring moderation, and doesn't need to offer a 'recommended reading' list.

By making the creation of collections available to all users, FurRag encourages the formation of user communities with shared interests and offers them the tools to rapidly and easily share and discover stories they might be interested in.

Site mascots
When the site was first created, Alex Vance commissioned seasoned artist Kamui to design four characters, who would emblemize the four user types originally devised in FurRag's functionality scheme. With the April 2007 update, the number was reduced to three.

Jack Rad is a fox with an active lifestyle, an optimistic attitude and enjoys coming home and enjoying a nice relaxing read. He represents the 'reader'.

Nick Brilliant is a dedicated, sedentary lupine writer who prefers to be left alone with his ornate typewriter and bristles at interruptions. Jack's enthusiasm for his work is an annoyance to him, though it's often Jack who looks after him when his dedication starts to affect his health. Nick represents the writer community on FurRag.

Dick McCritic is a tough-skinned raccoon with a critical eye and rather high standards. Representing the 'editor' on FurRag, he also signifies the firm but diplomatic way an editor should deal with the frequently negative response to their constructive criticism. Dick is therefore calm, clear and patient.
