Closure
During the closing ceremony of HCFC 2019, no plans for next year's con were discussed. This left the future of the con uncertain, with most people assuming it would not continue. On January 13 2020, the end of HCFC was announced in a Facebook post by convention director Captain Otter. He expressed an interest in hosting smaller events, and described the con as "not financially viable".

At this point, Sydney-based furry convention Aurawra had already been announced and was planned to run that year. A lot of the staff and volunteers from HCFC would go on to contribute to Aurawra and be involved in its creation, albeit under different leadership.

Criticism
For the main con photo taken during the fursuit walk, HCFC was known for excluding fursuits that the organisers didn't like, including partials. The con developed a reputation for generally being unwelcoming as a result.

The Fursuites Incident
Fursuites

A mainstream news article published on July 28 2018, during the midst of HCFC 2018, featured an interview with con chariman Captain Otter. He was quoted using the term "fursuites" to belittle fursuits that were colorful or cost less than $5000 USD, effectively punching down on the entire Australian fursuiting community. The incident was seen as an open admission of the con organisers' attitudes, which had been a common complaint up until this point.

The term was widely adopted in an ironic manner, with furries referring to their own suits as "fursuites", and joking about hypothetical highly exclusive events they were hosting where "fursuites" would not be allowed.
