2001:41D0:52:A00:0:0:0:324: added more, originally biased page now made unbiased

copyedit
wikify
NPOV
unref

Fur Isle was a proposed convention planned to be held on the Isle of Wight, England, on October 31st - November 3rd 2014.

History
Work on the convention started in early 2013, originally plans were for an event in East Sussex, before the move to the island was confirmed. The convention went live on UKFur forums and other websites in December generating a lot of interest, both positive and negative. The convention's website was plagued with issues, being down for maintenance for many months, as work progressed very slowly. An attempt was made to sell early interest tickets through Indiegogo alongside various merchandise and other offers, though this proved largely unsuccessful, and no actual tickets were sold so far in advance and with the limited information available. The idea of the event was heavily disliked by many UkFurs, on their Twitter, Facebook and UkFur forum page. Many of the ideas and suggestions put forward by the community seemed to have been disregarded, with little or no word on actual events during the convention.

This was followed by more setbacks, when the first choice hotel requested confirmation six months in advance of the details of at least 200 guests, when the convention organising committee had been planning for 120 or so. The result of this was a desperate search for an alternative venue, which proved of limited success. The idea of the event was heavily disliked by many UkFurs, on their Twitter, Facebook and UkFur forum page. Many of the ideas and suggestions put forward by the community seemed to have been disregarded, with little or no word on actual events during the convention.

Events
The original convention was replaced instead by the Fur Isle Events, running at various times through the year, many of them two days worth of planned activities. These were intended to bridge the gap between small local meets and full scale conventions, offering organised activities, entertainment, on-site food and more for a small ticket price, originally set at £10 a person. Furs around the UK expressed shock that 'Fur Isle' were charging for what is essentially a pay to attend furmeet in a public place. The first planned event is the Summer Party, due to be hosted on the beach. The convention organising committee seems to be hoping to host a new convention in October of 2015 instead, whilst also continuing the same smaller events around the rest of the year.

Criticism
Fur Isle and its staff have received a lot of criticism since the idea was first revealed, claims that the UK had no need of a third convention in such a small space, or that hosting the event so far south would make travel difficult for anyone in the north of the country.

The choice to locate on an island in particular raised concerns, due to the increased travel cost of the ferry crossing, prompting the committee to investigate coach hire as a cheaper alternative.

As well, the website has attracted much negative attention, in its initial incarnation, a simple template, only half finished, this disappeared for some months, for 'maintenance' only to reappear just the same. When the Summer Party was announced, the site was replaced with a single page featuring some generic images and blocks of text.

They have also received criticism, for running a new event, run by another Fur Isle member , without openly stating it is affiliated with the damaged Fur Isle name. As of the 24th June 2014, the site is down again, with no word of when it will be back up. According to their twitter page, several members of Fur Isle staff, disgruntled by the management, have also elected not to be part of their summer party, thus it has been cancelled.

References
<references/>

External links
* http://www.furislecon.co.uk/
* http://furisle.blogspot.co.uk/
* http://www.facebook.com/FurIsleCon
* FurIsle on Twitter

future-con-stub
