Before Disney released any information about the sequel that would eventually become Simba's Pride, the cub of Simba and Nala who appeared at the end of The Lion King was the source of much speculation and a character in many works of fan fiction.

Several months before the completion of the original film's production, a book series was released, known as The Lion King: Six New Adventures, featuring Kopa, the son of Simba and Nala. According to Alex Simmons, Kopa was his creation all the way with only Disney's label. In addition, he stated that he had no knowledge that Simba and Nala would be given a cub in the script, and in his experience, Disney separates their films from any book spin-offs.<ref

For the most part it was assumed the cub was male, and various names for him/her were said to have come from Disney sources. Fluffy was the name given to it by the animators during the production of The Lion King, according to the director's commentary on the LaserDisc edition (and later on the DVD release). It was not given an official name or gender, as at the time of the film's release, the film was expected to be a box-office bomb and therefore no sequels or spin-offs were planned ahead. In an interview with Phil Weinstein, one of the storyboarders for Simba's Pride, he claims that he has no knowledge of Kopa, and as a result disregarded him from the film. Two other names said to be considered for him during production of the sequel are Naba and Chaka, and for a while it appeared the latter was going to be the name of choice. Chaka was described in March 1997 as "at this point the closest thing to an official Disney name for the cub".

As story development continued, Chaka got a sister, Shani. Shani soon overtook Chaka in importance to the story, while Chaka became more marginalized and eventually was written out of the story altogether. With the cub now a female, other possible names for her that were said to be considered were Aisha (also a Neopet), and the one finally chosen for her, Kiara.

All of this took place over a period of about four years. Fans of the movie didn't wait around that long and soon came up with their own ideas about who the cub was. The most popular non-canonical name for the cub was Tanabi. Other names were proposed in various works of fan fiction for the cub, who was usually male and sometimes part of a litter that included other cubs, but Tanabi was by far the most widely used name.

Some fans have suggested that the cub at the end of the first movie is not Kiara at all but is in fact Kopa or Tanabi, noting that the appearance and coloration of the cub at the end of the first movie don't entirely match the appearance of Kiara (male and female lions were given different color schemes respectively), and/or citing The Lion King: Six New Adventures as a canon source. However, the books are not officially canon as they were written by people who don't belong to The Walt Disney Company and were published only in USA instead of world wide.

According to Andrew Collins, one of the animators of the sequel, he had stated that Kiara's redesign was a twist and a visual paradox. In his words "...you think it's a king, but it's a queen!" which identifies both known cubs as one.

Some have attempted to reconcile the cub's discrepancy by suggesting he may have somehow died or been killed at a young age, possibly by Zira. Other theories include being kidnapped by a lioness of a different pride and taken as her own child. No official statement has been made by Disney regarding the identity of the cub at the end of the first movie, but in the official canon, when only regarding the first film, it remains "Fluffy" and has no gender as its creators said in 1995. This is supported when in 2003, the commentary track was released and the filmmakers continued their cub as the genderless "Fluffy." The majority of fans consider it reasonably clear in Simba's Pride that Disney meant for us to accept that Kiara was in fact the cub we saw at the end of The Lion King, but some fans object that Kiara couldn't possibly be the cub at the end of The Lion King, that would mean she was presented before the pridelands twice, once at the end of The Lion King and a second time at the beginning of Simba's Pride. But the cub at the end could not be an older sibling to Kiara, because the sequel film's timeline was made so that there is no time for anyone else but Kiara to have been born - and especially Kopa appears as too old in the books to be the cub at the end and for him to have disappeared before the movie's events.

Others feel that speculation is pointless, on the basis that they think Simba's Pride contains serious plot holes and internal contradictions such that it is not accepted as a "real" sequel by them, despite the film's creation under the Walt Disney Company making it officially canon to the original film. Another reason why speculation is pointless, is that the sequel's makers used the cub from the first film for baby Kiara in their film's official trailer, which literally officializes that the cub and Kiara are one and same in essence.

Regardless of the fan-theories or any beliefs of a cub named "Kopa", in the Lion King franchise, the cub is officially Kiara.

In the 2015-2019 series, The Lion Guard, a new cub of Simba is introduced known as Kion. Many people speculate that Kion is an alternated characterization of Kopa, however, as Kion is created by the Walt Disney Company, and Kopa is not, it makes it impossible for Kion to be a retcon of Kopa. Many people also speculate that Kion is the cub at the end of the original film, due to Kion's fur being similar to the cub's fur. However, director Ford Riley stated that the pilot film of The Lion Guard, Return of the Roar, as well as the first two seasons serve as midquels to Simba's Pride, taking place after Kiara meets Kovu, but before her first hunt. In order for Kion to be the cub at the end of the first film, the opening scene in the sequel, would serve as a prequel to the ending of the original film, which contradicts the Proud of Simba's Pride documentary in which Darrell Rooney explicitly states "The seeds of it [the sequel] are in the first film," confirming that Simba's Pride is a direct sequel.

As a result, the cub at the end of the original film is Kiara, but Simba has an official son - Kion.
Scar (also known as Taka) is the main antagonist of The Lion King and a minor antagonist in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride. He was Simba's uncle Zira's friend Vitani's and Nuka's ancestor Kovu 's adoptive father Kiara 's great uncle and Mufasa's younger brother. Unlike his brother, Scar is small and thin, and his mane is black. There is a scar over his left eye. He is voiced by Jeremy Irons in the English version of the movie.

Childhood
In the book A Tale of Two Brothers,Scar was born under the name "Taka"--Swahili slang for "want" as the younger son of his parents Ahadi and Uru. His older brother Mufasa was chosen to be king over him, a decision which caused Taka much sadness and distanced him from his father and older brother. Over time, Taka came to resent Ahadi for favoring Mufasa and for choosing kingly duties over spending time with his sons. One day when Uru told her mate Ahadi to stay behind and tend the kingdom while she is away looking for a new food and water supply, Taka went on a daily patrol with Mufasa and Ahadi. While they were patrolling the Pride Lands, the three ran into Rafiki, a traveling baboon who was being plagued by the trio of hyenas until he was saved by Ahadi, alongside his two sons Mufasa and Taka. After the departure of the hyenas and talked about Rafiki's mission, Ahadi, welcomed Rafiki into the Pride Lands and let him spend the night at Pride Rock. Even after Taka acted bored and commented that they should have let the baboon die, When Mufasa stayed by his father's side throughout the ordeal, Taka wandered off, feeling unconcerned with his father's doings. Later that night, Taka set a cobra on Mufasa, hoping to kill his brother in his sleep, but Rafiki thwarted the plan. The following day, after the attempted murder Ahadi had promised to take his sons out hunting, until a group of angry Pride Landers stalled him, and he was forced to cut the hunting trip short a change of events which that does not settle well with Taka. Although Mufasa understood why his father had made that decision, Taka reacted with outrage and accused his father of always finding other things to do when they were supposed to spend time together. In answer to his son's protests, Ahadi attempted to explain that his brother Mufasa understood the pressures of ruling a kingdom, but Taka's temper only flared, and he accused Ahadi of favoring Mufasa. Despite the young lion's animosity, Ahadi has decided to pursue his kingly duties, by leaving Taka alone to hunt with Mufasa.

Before the hunt, Taka plotted with the hyenas, Shenzi, Banzai and Ed, to get Mufasa in trouble with Ahadi, so that their father would rescind on his decision to appoint Mufasa as the next king. Meanwhile he lured Mufasa down to the waterhole, where a greedy Buffalo, named Boma, is hoarding all the water supply for himself. When Mufasa tries to reason with Boma, Taka interjects with a demand: and told Boma that he should either clear out by order of the King, or challenge Mufasa to a fight. Boma becomes enraged because he tricked Mufasa into angering Boma. When the buffalo began to Mufasa, Taka, only laughed at his brother's fear until his herd, began to attack the young lion giving him his scar. Before he is killed, Ahadi came to the rescue to stop the attack. And Taka was taken back to Pride Rock, where Rafiki cared for him until he was patched up enough to speak although he will have a scar with him for the rest of his life since it won't heal. Once recovered, Taka was told by his father, that the scar he'd earned will serve as a reminder of his recklessness. When Mufasa asked his brother why he made Boma angry, Taka only admitted he wanted to embarrass Mufasa and to get even with Ahadi for breaking his promise to go hunting with him, then Ahadi warned his son to keep his anger at bay. At first Taka was angry, but then he finally accepted his fathers words. And he asked to be called "Scar" from now on.

In his youth, Scar was tasked with leading the Lion Guard before Simba was born, and was given a power called the Roar of the Elders by the the Great Kings of the Past. When it was used he summoned the Great Kings of the Past, to roar along with him. However, that power went to Scar's head, and he believed that with this power he should be the king instead of Mufasa. So he planned to dethrone of Mufasa, by using the Roar of the Elders. But when the rest of the Lion Guard refused to help aid him in his plot, Scar destroyed them and thus lost his power as the Roar of the Elders was not meant to be used for evil. After many years of the Lion Guard's downfall, Scar focused his life on striving for his older brother's throne and continued to plot schemes with the hyenas to rule the Pride Lands.

Adulthood
spoiler
Scar's jealousy of Mufasa carried over into his adulthood. During Mufasa's reign, Scar became an aloof pridal member whose presence seemed tolerated by most.

When Simba was born--quelling any chances of Scar gaining the throne--Scar's envy grew. He began to scheme ways of killing off his nephew and brother. It was Scar who tricked Simba into venturing to the Elephant Graveyard. There, Simba; his betrothed, Nala; and the majordomo, Zazu were almost killed by the hyenas Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. They were rescued by the timely arrival of Mufasa, which angered Scar. Once Mufasa had taken the others out of the Elephant Graveyard, Scar went back, and with the hyenas, he discussed his plans to kill Mufasa and Simba both.

Not long after the incident at the Elephant Graveyard, Scar lured Simba into the Gorge by telling him that his father had a surprise for him. He left Simba at the bottom of the Gorge and snuck off to signal the hyenas, who were waiting with a wildebeest herd on the cliffs above. The hyenas forced the wildebeests into a stampede that charged into the Gorge, right towards Simba.

While Simba ran for his life, Scar returned to Pride Rock and told Mufasa that Simba was in danger. Mufasa rushed to his son's aid and succeeded in getting Simba out of the way of the herd, but when he tried to climb to safety himself, Scar intercepted him on the cliff face. Mufasa pleaded for his brother's help, but Scar instead flung him off the cliff. Mufasa was trampled to death by the wildebeest.

When Simba returned to the bottom of the Gorge and found the body of Mufasa, Scar guilted Simba into believing that he was responsible for the death of his father and urged him to run away. Simba did so, and Scar sent the hyenas after him. However, Simba managed to escape into a patch of thorns, and the hyenas left him for dead.

Scar returned to Pride Rock and delivered the news that Mufasa and Simba were both dead. With no other heirs in place, Scar was able to claim the throne.

Reign
spoiler
Scar's first order of business as new king was to give the hyenas free range of the Pridelands. He also banned his brother's name because Scar did want anybody to know he was his brother's murderer.

Specific events during Scar's reign are sketchy at best. During this time, he married Zira, who was already a mother with 3 cubs.

Scar's rule lasted for quite a long time--up until Simba's ascension to adulthood. During that time, thanks to Scar's irresponsible management, the Pridelands became over-hunted and barren. The pride members began to voice their desire to follow the herds to greener, more prosperous areas, but Scar would not listen. Food became so scarce that even the hyenas--Scar's avid supporters--began to murmur against him.

During this time, Nala fled the pride. Some speculate that her reasons for leaving stemmed from a confrontation she had with Scar, in which Scar attempted to make her his queen. This idea is supported by The Lion King on Broadway show, in which Scar makes overtures towards Nala during the song The Madness of King Scar. However, when Nala explains her escape to Simba in the movie, she cites a desire to "find help" as her reason for leaving the pride.

When Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed complained to Scar about the lionesses not hunting, Scar demanded an explanation from Sarabi, whom he had demoted from queen to huntress. Sarabi tried to explain to him that the herds had moved and that the pride should leave Pride Rock, but again Scar refused. Enraged, Sarabi compared Scar to Mufasa, and Scar struck her across the face. In that moment, Simba appeared and confronted Scar. It was then that he learned the truth of Mufasa's death, and when the lionesses heard, they rallied around Simba. The hyenas backed Scar, and a battle ensued.

Simba chased Scar up to the pinnacle of Pride Rock, where Scar pleaded for his life, telling Simba that the hyenas were the ones who plotted Mufasa's death. After that, Simba says to him "Why should I believe you? Everything you ever told me was a lie". Simba agreed to spare Scar if he would "run away and never return". Scar said those same words to the younger Simba after murdering his brother years ago. However, Scar opted to attack Simba instead. In the struggle, Scar was flung off of Pride Rock. There, the hyenas--who had heard him try to slough the blame of Mufasa's death off on them--turned on Scar and killed him. Scar was also burned by the fire that surrounded the hyenas.

Legacy
In the second movie, Simba's Pride, it is alleged that before his death, Scar's wife Zira, ruled the Pride Lands alongside him as Queen. Despite this, he had no children, despite Zira's 3 young cubs becoming Scar's step-children. Sometime before or after Scar and Zira's union, Scar adopted "hand-picked" Kovu--another one of Zira's offspring--as his heir before his death. In Simba's Pride, Nuka reveals that--despite a striking resemblance to Scar--Kovu is not Scar's real son.

After Scar's death, Zira and some of her fellow lionesses were banished from the Pridelands by Simba. They became known as the Outlanders, and they remained loyal to Scar. This has raised some controversy, because in The Lion King, all the lionesses fought on Simba's side.
spoiler
In Simba's Pride, Simba relives his father's death in a dream. In this dream, Simba finds Mufasa at the edge of a cliff. Simba reaches out to grab his paw but Scar appears and prevents him. Mufasa disappears into the stampede below. Simba looks up at Scar, and Scar grabs his paw. Scar then turns into Kovu, and throws Simba off the cliff. Simba wakes up before he hits the ground.

Legacy
In the second movie, Simba's Pride, it is alleged that before his death, Scar used to father Nuka with Zira before he died. Some speculate that Vitani is also the offspring of this pairing, but it has been confirmed. Despite having a cub of his own flesh and blood, Scar "hand-picked" Kovu--another one of Zira's offspring--as his heir before his death.

In "The Lion Guard: The Rise of Scar", After Kion uses the Roar of the Elders in his anger, Kion summons the most greatest villain Scar being revived. With him summoned, Scar begins to get revenge on his nephew take over the Pride Lands defeat the new Lion Guard and overthrow Simba as the king. Meanwhile the Lion Guard begins to come face to face with Scar for the first time.
