A rabbit (also known as "lapin" or "lapine" in French, "usagi" in Japanese) is a herbivorous mammal, physically characterised by long hindlegs, long ears, large front teeth, and a very short, fluffy tail, called a scut or bobtail.

Species confusion
The rabbit is a very well-known animal, but similarities between different species often results in it being confused with other species. The archetypal rabbit is the European Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), which is brown-grey in colour. All domestic rabbits are descended from this species.

In America, European rabbits are often confused with cottontails, which look practically the same, but are a different genus.

The most common confusion is with hares; which look like large rabbits. The two are not the same, but they tend to be lumped together.

Rabbits in culture
Rabbits are well known for being prolific breeders (as evidenced in the phrase 'breeding like rabbits'). For this reason, they are often used as a symbol of fertility. For the same reason, they are regarded as pests by farmers.

The rabbit is widely predated, and this role as a prey animal also lends it an air of innocence.

Anthropomorphic rabbits have often appeared in film and literature. For example, there is the White Rabbit in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland; Roger Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Warner Brothers' Bugs Bunny and many others.

Bhunnies
A "bhunny" is an attractive female rabbit. The term is comparable to "vixen", but applied to a rabbit instead of a fox. The word is vocalized slowly and drawn out (bhuuuuunny), as if the lower jaw were numb and/or weighted down. The term is the result of a male character seeing an attractive doe rabbit character and being so distracted by the sight he is unable to say anything else.

Many associate the term with the characters Rhonda or her mother RM from the comic strip Roomies, but it is unclear whether the term originated there.

Popularity
According to Pounced.org, rabbits are the 9th most popular phenotype.

Some popular culture examples are:

* Bugs Bunny from Looney Toons
* Lola Bunny from Space Jam
* Buster Bunny from Tiny Toons.
* Babs Bunny from Tiny Toons.
* Cream from the sonic series

:This is not the same person as the similarly-named writer Doug Linger

Doug Winger (also known as JustDoug) is a well-known artist in the furry fandom whose trademark is hyper-endowed herm characters. Though he is best known for the hyper-endowment depicted in most of his drawings, his art also characterizes his good humor and attention to detail.

Doug is also known for his quick wit and love of word play. The unofficial unit of squickage, the milliWinger, is named after him, as is the term Wingerized.

A rumor suggested that Doug was an animator for the acclaimed Nickelodeon cartoon series Spongebob Squarepants. This rumor is incorrect, but he has indeed worked as an offsite freelance animation background artist for the same company for Dora the Explorer and Angry Beavers.

Doug regularly plays himself as a human character on FurryMUCK, where he often spends time in the Herm Haven (a place whose very existence can be partially credited to him). One of his most famous furry characters, Pandora Pup, is also a regular resident at the Haven -- but she/shi is not played by Doug.

Doug presently resides at the Hotel Yorba household in Santa Ana, California, USA, with fellow artists Steve Martin and Bob Guthrie.

Career Change
In December 2006 Doug Winger stepped down as the United States' ambassador to the United Nations. President George W. Bush accepted his resignation which was likely submitted due to the unlikelyness that Doug would be confirmed by the Democratic Senate when his recess term was to end in 2007.
