Zira (Swahili for "hate") was the mother of Kovu, Vitani, and Nuka, and the wife of Scar in The Lion King. She makes her first appearance in The Lion King as the second main antagonist. After Scar was gone Simba became the king, but Zira told Simba that he could not rule the Pride Lands because Scar had chosen her son, Kovu, to become the next king. But Simba told Zira that Scar was never the real king anyway. However, Zira would not listen to reason, and she attacked Simba, as she was very close to Scar but alas Simba won the battle and Zira had lost, then after that he had to banish Zira and her family from the Pride Lands for supporting Scar. Not long after wart she makes her second appearance in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride as the main antagonist, where she trains Kovu to avenge Scar's death and take over the Pridelands from Simba for the pride of lionesses she leads. Her plans are thwarted when Kovu falls in love with Simba's daughter, Kiara. After a fight with Simba and his pride, she falls off a cliff into the flooded ravine below, and presumably dies. Zira has a pale yellow coat and original dark stripe that runs down her head. She is evil and has a dark nature like Scar. Zira has a strong hatred for Simba and the Pridelanders. She also wants to murder Kiara (Simba's daughter) and have no royal line left. Zira wants Kovu to be the new male king and for her to be a queen and take over the Pridelands. But, Kovu eventually falls in love with Kiara, leaving Zira to carry out the plan on her own. The other outsiders betray her and join Simba's pride. Zira then supposedly dies by a flowing river, and her hanging off a ledge just like the way Mufasa died. Zira is not showed again, nor mentioned.
In a scene that survived to the rough animation stage, Zira committed suicide: Kiara offers to help Zira, but Zira replies "No. Never." with a twisted grin, and lets go; falling to her death into the raging river below. This scene was cut because it was "Too dark for a Disney film." Zira's grin can still be seen in the finished film.
The character was voiced by Suzanne Pleshette in the English version of the movie.
