Xydexx
From WikiFur, the furry encyclopedia.
Xydexx is a silly purple inflatable unicorn character created by Karl Jorgensen on December 13, 1993. Xydexx resides on FurryMUCK near the Multi-Road Intersection. He is known on Second Life as Demented Calliope.Contents |
[edit] Xydexx the character
Xydexx never really had a history or backstory other than showing up one day on FurryMUCK and liking it so much he stayed. After piecing together plot ideas from various sources, the official rumor is that he used to be a mascot for the Matteawan Rubber Company in upstate New York. When the company closed, Xydexx found himself out of a job. In the early 1970s he found temporary work overseas in various films by Moldavian animator Adrian Vonner, most notably Mr Squeakypony meets Herr Pin. In 2001, he sold his sense of humor for some magic beans.
Xydexx spends his time being bouncy and squeaky and generally friendly and upbeat. Despite being his reassuring hue and altogether fey manner, he is characterized as a somewhat unpredictable and possibly even terrifying figure, with exasperated mothers being heard to caution their unruly offspring, "Eat up all your peas or Xydexx will come huggle you!"[1] He used to be white with a black mane, but turned purple in May 2003. Although Xydexx is inflatable, he is not a "sex doll" or a maliciously inclined space robot. Xydexx has made several appearances in Jim Groat's web comic West Corner Of the Park.
[edit] FurryMUCK description
Xydexx Squeakypony is an inflatable anthro unicorn stallion. He stands 6' tall and has a light purple latex body. His dark purple mane goes down to his shoulders. Xydexx wears a black short-sleeve shirt with "100% Squeaky!" written on the front, black jeans, and some battle-scarred hiking boots for his cute lil' rubber feet. He smiles and nods shyly back at you in greeting.
[edit] Xydexx's player
Xydexx is originally from New York. He has extensive desktop publishing experience and currently works as a proposal specialist. He resides at Castle Xy-Gel in Leesburg, Virginia with his longtime partner, Brian Harris.
[edit] Conventions and Furmeets
Xydexx got involved with furry fandom in December 1993. He attended his first furry convention, Furtasticon, in 1994. Since then, he has attended more than 30 furry conventions including:
- Anthrocon 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
- ConFurence 1995 (6), 1997 (8), 1999 (9)
- Confurence East 1995 (I), 1996 (II)
- Duckon 1999
- Further Confusion 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
- Megaplex 2003, 2004
- Mephit FurMeet 1998
- Midwest FurFest 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
Xydexx used to typically attend the "Big Three" (AC, FC, and MFF) each year as a sponsor or supersponsor, but has recently dropped FC from his schedule in order to attend Gen Con. He can also be found at annual gatherings in the DC metro area, such as Pandaguy's Picnic and Meat And Fire. He maintained the webpage for the DC-Area Furry Mailing List from 1998–2001.
In 2003 and 2006, Xydexx organized the Mine Fire Fur Meet, a furry excursion to the smoking ruins of Centralia, Pennsylvania (and a coal mine in nearby Ashland).
[edit] Fandom activity
After years of volunteering behind the scenes, Xydexx joined Anthrocon's staff to serve as Editor-In-Chief for the conbook in 2002. In July 2003, he joined Anthrocon, Inc.'s Board of Directors as Publications Director. Xydexx attended SMOFcon 22 in December 2004.
| | Little does anyone know this is just another plot of mine to take over the fandom and replace it with gigantic quivering monkeypants. | |
Xydexx has been a longtime supporter of Furry Peace with an eye toward improving furry fandom and making it "a cool place for everyone who likes anthropomorphic animals." He was an early advocate of panels to welcome new convention attendees, and strongly supported creating Media Liaison positions for furry conventions and instituting policies to control exploitative media crews.
Xydexx also supports distributing positive, accurate information about the fandom as far and wide as possible. He has maintained Furry Fandom Infocenter, a resource for people new to or curious about furry fandom, since 1999. He has also created press kits, served as an ad hoc (and perhaps, at this point, official—since he didn't run away from the job fast enough) media liaison at Anthrocon from 2006 onwards, and has been quoted in news articles[2][3] as a result.
Xydexx dislikes flamewars and usually drops out of them in favor of doing better things with his time. In 2000, he voted in support of creation of the moderated newsgroup rec.arts.furry in hopes of providing a flame-free alternative to alt.fan.furry. He arranged Mine Fire Fur Meet in 2003 and 2006, and founded the group Cool Furries in November 2006.
Xydexx writes a little, draws a little, and procrastinates a lot. He isn't really an inflatable unicorn; he just plays one on the internet.
[edit] Xydexx's Axiom of Fandom Enjoyability
Xydexx is highly critical of anti-furries and other attempts to divide the fandom. Xydexx's Axiom of Fandom Enjoyability, initially developed in 1999 and later expanded, states:
| | If you hang around with a bunch of people who go around saying how much furry fandom sucks, you will eventually start to believe it's true. If you try to convince a bunch of people who enjoy saying furry fandom sucks that it isn't true, you're wasting time that would better be spent hanging around with people who are actually fun to hang around with.[4] | |
Or, more succinctly:
| | It's better to be a silly squeaky pony than a bitter old dinosaur. | |
Xydexx believes living well is the best revenge.
[edit] Other interests and activities
Xydexx's other interests include urban exploration, recumbent bicycling, geocaching, and researching local history. He is a supporter of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Southern Poverty Law Center, American Civil Liberties Union, and the Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League.
[edit] Urban exploration
Xydexx has served as a "tour guide" on many excursions bringing furry fans (Astor, Cobalt, Felorin, KoOkY!, Morton Fox, Rigel, Roxikat, Uncle Kage, Windsinger, and others) to explore many abandoned locations, including Bannerman's Castle, Briarcliff Lodge,[5] the Paulinskill Viaduct, and so on.
Xydexx has a large online photo gallery of abandoned buildings he's visited called Xydexx's Exploring and Modern Ruins Page. The site began as a small collection of photographs of Bannerman's Castle on Xydexx's AOL homepage. In 1999, he created another page of photographs on smart.net that merged the castle pictures with pictures of Centralia, which he has been visiting since 1996.[6] On October 24, 1999, Xydexx registered the domain xydexx.com, and by March 2000 had merged his collections to a single site covering Bannerman's Castle, Centralia, and the New York Central Putnam Division.[7]
The site has expanded over the years to include a variety of different locations, including Briarcliff Lodge, a former college campus which was destroyed in a fire in 2003. Some of Xydexx's photographs of Briarcliff Lodge were published in the Images Of America: Briarcliff Lodge.[8]
