Is the stay/go voting for all admins or only English language admins? • Ekevu • 14:06, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

I think it should be for all administrators. --GreenReaper(talk) 14:12, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
It's for all of them, non-English versions of WikiFur are being given the opportunity to move to the new server too if they choose to do so. -- Alexander Greytc 14:13, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

I just wanted to add that there should be a certain amount of pragmatism involved. If one choice isn't meeting our needs, we should move onto the next option on the list. --Rat 20:51, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm hoping that this will work for us (at least for as long as Wikia did), but yes - if we find things aren't working out, we will go elsewhere - probably Linode, because we get a service which we have control over for a reasonable, predictable cost. --GreenReaper(talk) 05:44, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

A few Wikia issues observed by other wikis[edit]

I've been keeping an eye on what's been happening here and on some of the other wikis which have already left (see http://complaintwiki.org for what I've pieced together as a chronology) and it looks like other wikis are seeing the following problems:

  • Wikia is leaving the old wikis up under the original name and domain, in direct competition with the new one; Wikia staff are removing information from wikis to hide the fact the original community has left.
  • Wikia is not only using the GFDL as a means of continuing to use content despite the original authors requesting its removal; it is also trying to twist GFDL into things that it is not (such as an obligation to license new articles created after the move for commercial use or to force links to Wikia onto every page of the new wiki).
  • In one case (Creatures wiki), Wikia had registered the very name the community wanted to use for their new wiki, effectively cybersquatting the name so that no one can use it.
  • It is also becoming increasingly more difficult to retrieve existing database text to re-use it on your new wiki; wikia:database downloads which used to run a day or so behind now are run no more than once every three weeks or more - so the data is incomplete and outdated. It's also defaced with "From {SITENAME}, a Wikia wiki" on every page, every template, every message and the images archive is no longer provided.

You may want to look at tfwiki.net (Transformers) and illogicopedia.org (Illogicopedia), in both their old and new version, to get a clearer picture of what to expect. I don't blame you for wanting to move, but thought the situation on the other wikis that have escaped from the confines may be of interest. --carlb 05:12, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
