WikiFur:This week's featured article/Week 34, 2006
From WikiFur, the furry encyclopedia.
Fur Affinity is one of the furry fandom's largest communities, and the second largest furry-specific art gallery after the VCL. Launched in early 2005 as an alternative to sites such as SheezyArt and deviantART, it promoted itself as allowing people from the furry/anthro fandoms to upload art, music and stories regardless of rating.
Initial growth was swift, but Fur Affinity suffered from major security holes and hacking during summer 2005. The site was shut down on 1 August due to disagreements between lead coder Jheryn Lightfoot and host Arcturus, who left to work on ArtPlz. Relaunched in December, the current site is administrated by The Dragoneer, coded by Jehryn and hosted by Gushi with a team of volunteer admins, coders and moderators.
Features separating Fur Affinity from most other furry archives include the ability to track new updates from favorite artists and highlight favorites. The site aims to promote community through its comments system and individual journals. Art rated as mature or adult is not shown to visitors, only to users over 18 years who have specified it. A tagging system is also used to allow users to browse or block art based on their preferences. (more...)
