Why Coyotes Howl (ISBN 0-9712670-7-3, 212 pgs.) is a collection of stories by Watts Martin published by Sofawolf Press in January 2005, with a cover illustration by Heather Luterman (Kyoht). It was nominated for Best Other Literary Work at the 2005 Ursa Major Awards.

Of the fourteen stories collected here, nine have been published in other furry fanzines or small publications. Included in this anthology are:

  • Why Coyotes Howl
  • Dreams Are For Vixens (Touch 1, 1992)
  • Still Life, With Espresso (Mythagoras Vol. 2, 1998)
  • The Fence (The Furkindred, 1991)
  • Seeing Things
  • Beast (Mythagoras 1, 1990)
  • The Moon In Water
  • The Fox Maiden (PawPrints Fanzine 3, 1996)
  • Vertical Blanking (Xero 1, 1997, as Recondite Directives)
  • Only With Thine Eyes (FurVersion 14, 1987)
  • Daughter of Shadows
  • Without Evidence
  • Going To The Dogs (Reagent 1, 1989)
  • Traveling Music (Mythagoras 2 – 3, 1991)

It includes an Afterword by the author, wherein he mentions that when preparing these stories for this collection he went back and reedited them, fixing what he felt were glaring errors in the original versions. He also mentions that Without Evidence is a previously unpublished story set in the world of Ranea. He didn’t include others because “most of them are available in other forms for people who look hard enough, either in back issues of YARF! or internet story archives.” He hints that a book collection of these Ranea stories is “not out of the question.”
