Convention attendance figures[edit]

Thank you for your recent contributions to Anthrocon. According to my analysis, Anthrocon was actually the largest convention starting in 2000, and the following year that it exceeded the maximum attendance of any previous convention (ConFurence 9 in 1998 with 1250). Regarding your Anthrocon 1999 attendance updates, I don't think people who paid but didn't attend should be counted toward attendance figures. As far as I know, they aren't counted in any other year or by any other convention in their attendance figures (although I'm really not certain on this point), and we should be consistent about this to the best of our ability. There's certainly no problem with mentioning paid non-attendees in the convention article, but I think the "official attendance figure" that gets propagated to other pages on the website that cover convention attendance should be the count of those who actually attended. --mwalimu 20:21, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

My impression is most conventions count "badges paid for" (including guests and staff) rather than "badges picked up", on the basis that it's both easier to track and leads to larger figures. I have seen some variation, though. --GreenReaper(talk) 20:54, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Now that you mention it, it could be either way, and probably varies. As nice as it would be to be consistent, it may be impossible to determine who was included in some of the attendance figures, particularly those dating back more than a few years. I believe staff should be included. At least one recent convention reported attendees who bought multiple day passes and may have been double-counted. It gets fuzzy... --mwalimu 03:26, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Anthrocon attempts to solve that issue by 'upgrading' day passes instead of having people purchase multiples, to note. --Chiaroscuro
I did mean to indicate that 2001 was the year Anthrocon broke CF9's attendance record; listing it as 2002 was an error. I'll edit to clarify that was what was meant. I have spoken with quite a few other conventions, and they tend to list Paid Attending; to note where a lot of the information derives from lists 'Paid Attending'. This is a reason I included the 804 figure on Anthrocon's 1999 page as well, to clarify the change. To include Staff, Guests, etc I use the term "Paid and Assigned Attending" for maximum clarity; all conventions whom I have spoke with included Staff and Guests in their attendance figures as well. I can say with clarity that Anthrocon's attendance since 2006 is the Paid and Assigned Attending figure. I am currently reviewing our records very thoroughly, as I have noticed discrepancy between Anthrocon's own history page an Wikifur's page, and would like to get them in sync. --Chiaroscuro

Top conventions by year[edit]

Thank you for creating the "Attendance by Serial Year" section to Top conventions by year. A very nice addition to the article. I'm ambivalent about creating a 2011 section in that article yet and have started a discussion topic in that article's talk page. We would welcome your input. --mwalimu 17:25, 5 April 2011 (CEST)
