A totem, in the furry fandom (and especially among lifestylers), is an animal with which one has a deep spiritual affinity. Some believe their totems are external spirits, while others believe they are symbols that reflect their inner self. Beliefs in totems in general have existed since at least the year 3000 BC, and possibly earlier.

In some branches of Christianity, totem animals are incorporated into their teachings; these branches sincerely believe in guardian angels, and that angels often appear in forms.

Totems play a role in the 2003 movie Brother Bear, and for some characters in the setting New World Awaiting.
