The Skeptic's Guide to Science Fiction is a piece by Robert J. Sawyer which appeared in The Ottawa Citizen on November 14, 1999. It refers to conventions which "can focus on sci-fi, fantasy, gaming, the Klingon Empire or "filking." Or "furries.""[1] After defining filking, Sawyer states:

At "furries," people dress up as their favourite animals or anthropomorphics or animal-like aliens; Wookies, for example, are big at furries.[1]

Those in furry fandom do not refer to furry conventions as "furries".
