This is Rat, the Yerf guy.. I think I may have messed up the flow a bit, could I get help cleaning it up? Its like trying to represent a 3D thing on a 2D space. There's chronological, but also several threads of things are trying to be represented, the site's main history, as well as little offshoot things.

I read it closer, and it implied some things that weren't true. For example, when the change was made from SCFA to Yerf, that was only a name change, and some redesign of the layout. There was no relaunch as far as rules or anything else goes. It used to be at http://rat.org/yerf, and I wanted it to have its own domain so it could live on without me should the time came, and it did. ((part of comment by --Kilorat))

This is doubtless my fault. I was trying to to piece it together from newsgroup posts and the quotes on the back of sugar packets, so I'm sure I got a few things mixed up. :-) ((part of reply by --GreenReaper))

And the grandfathering issue was only due to how long the site had been around, and how inevitibly the rejected applicants would find worse art than their own to point at and ask why that is allowed on but theirs is not. I'm not even sure if the grandfathering thing is worth meantioning really. ((part of comment by --Kilorat))

I think it should be there because of the way it constantly seemed to come up as an issue. It was the reason that there were artists there of the same relative quality as those who were later turned away - without it, Yerf just looks arbitrary. ((part of reply by --GreenReaper))

My move to california from the east coast occured Sept 22, 1998, and Yerf was down for only a week. I pretty much drove to Tugrik's work from NH, in my compact car for 2500 miles with all my possessions. Somehow it survived. :) ((part of comment by --Kilorat))

I can top that - I disassembled my computer completely, packed it in my suitcase, and flew 4000 miles from London to Detroit (in fact, more, because I stopped off in Atlanta). Who knows what they did to it in baggage handling, but it survived! ((part of reply by --GreenReaper))

That whole episode had a sad ending, Tugrik made some promises that he didn't deliver on, or he didn't communiate his progress despite me asking, leaving me to believe he lost interest. So I asked for the site back so I could give it to Dingo, who had some great ideas and I believed would do great things. We parted company with him believing I intended to take it back the entire time and I was just using him for temporary hosting. We havent spoken since. So maybe we should downplay, but not remove that section out of respect for Tugrik. Or include it for history's sake, though it is more gossipy that historical. It would be like documenting president Hoover's wife was sleeping with the gardener or something (i just made that up, just an example), its kind of irrelevent. --Kilorat (talk) 08:27, 14 November 2005

Misunderstandings happen. Hopefully WikiFur can be a way of sorting them out as much as anything, given the ability it has to attract all members of the community. I think all that really needs to be said is what actually happened. The reasons behind it . . . well, they're not that encyclopediac, but they're here if people want to find out. --GreenReaper(talk) 15:18, 14 Nov 2005 (UTC)

--- No worries on my end. I knew I was a temporary host from the start, so returning it when asked was no big deal. Once Yerf moved on I concentrated more on the other sites I hosted, and I've kept up the various hosting projects to this day. They're a little bit bigger of an operation now, spanning three data centers, but they are still dedicated to providing free services to webcomics and artists who need a place. Hosting Yerf in the early days was a good nudge in the right direction for this kind of stuff, so I enjoyed my time helping you guys out.

Never did quite figure out why you guys chose to, as you put it, 'part company' from me and not talk since, or why you were so worried about the process of having it returned. I figure it was because I was just a sitehost and not really a hang-out-level of friend. Our crowds didn't really cross much, either. Because of this I felt your caution about things was understandable. At least I hope you felt I did my job honorably, and that any worries you had about it were proven to be misplaced.

I'm honestly surprised you guys mentioned me in there due to the short tenure, but I'm glad you did. Thanks for remembering! --Tugrik (talk) 07:18, 27 February 2006

AfD on Wikipedia[edit]

The Yerf article on Wikipedia is presently up for deletion. Saving it requires the following:

  • Be a Wikipedia editor with a significant number of edits. Unfortunately, edits from new users are discounted, so if you're not already a participant in Wikipedia, the best you can to is bring this up with friends who are.
  • Make yourself familiar with all relevant policies for inclusion of material in Wikipedia. If you're arguing for the article to be kept, it has to be kept for a reason based on Wikipedia's rules.
  • Visit Yerf's AfD page, while logged in as your Wikipedia user name, and place a vote stating "keep" (or "delete", if you don't think it should be there), with a short description of what rules justify your vote.

The following will be counterproductive, causing it to be deleted:

  • For the love of all that's holy, don't create an account just to vote on this AfD. That counts as stuffing the ballot via "sock-puppets" or "meat-puppets", and not only will these votes be discounted, but the credibility of lots of other votes will be threatened too. If you're not a long-time editor, find a friend who is, and inform them about the issue.

Fortunately, I am a long-time Wikipedia editor. I'll see what I can do (which will probably involve improving the existing article). --GreenReaper(talk) 18:08, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
I've already handled that. What mostly needs to happen to sway the balance of the votes is to find, and cite, print articles about the fandom that specifically refer to Yerf. An hour's searching online didn't yield much, mostly because it's hard to track down copies of the print articles online amidst false positives.
A widely-distributed print article that spent a paragraph discussing furry art archives would likely be enough, but I don't recall any articles that devoted that much space. Multiple widely-distributed articles that give a one-line mention of it might be sufficient.

Heralded[edit]

"it been heralded as the best example of a feasible non-adult image board showcasing the best the fandom can produce and conceive." is vague and puffy. Better wording? Specifics? Reference? -- Sine 02:04, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

...how about now?,... Other suggestions? Spirou 05:11, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

The "Controversy" section[edit]

There are no fewer than six "citation needed" tags in this one short section. This seems a bit much for a featured article! On top of this, at least one allegation there is a pretty serious one - enough so that if this were a UK site there'd be a possible case for a libel suit. At the very least, I'd have thought that that particular accusation ought to be properly referenced. Loganberry (Talk) 19:00, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Okay, since nothing has been done about this in nine months, I've removed the most serious personal allegation. It shouldn't go back without proof. Loganberry (Talk) 19:14, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Comment by Dingofox[edit]

(from Dingo) I'm sure somebody can edit this to format it, it's more of a non-wiki-style explanation and a plea. The truth is, the donations were around $6000, yes. They went into a new server and hosting costs. It was said by somebody I used money on drugs and stuff, but I didn't. I did buy a new server and pay for hosting costs as long as I could. The server that was bought I'm sure FRAAR has taken as payment. I did run into hard times, long story, but I never used any of the money beyond use for Yerf. I still own the rights for it, and am trying to get something done with it, of course no promises. But hosting now would be something I could afford if whatever I have in mind comes into fruition. I want what I have in mind to be more than furry but furry would be a great start. I really am sorry to everybody who donated and stuff. We always wanted it to continue on forever and I was younger and never the best admin. I screwed up and it was my fault it failed as it did. Here's hoping to the future, if you want to contact me I'm sure you can figure out how. Please do. From when donations were taken years and years ago, I still have every letter and card sent to me kept in a safe. I'm sorry I disappointed everybody.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dingofox (talkcontribs) 18:03, 12 November 2012 .

Hello, this is Dirt Fox. Right now I have the link on yerf.com go to yerf.metafur.org. If there's anywhere else it should go nowadays please let me know, I'll be glad to change it. --Dirt Fox, 3 Jul 2020 02:48 UTC

Is fine right now. Is not a full site page, but indicates that is Yerf. Do you want us to use the direct link one instead?. It will be no problem. Cheers - Spirou (talk) 23:14, 2 July 2020 (EDT)
