Talk:Fourth wall

Well! I fail to see how this can "not be furry related" when I created it in response to the highlighted reference for "Fourth Wall" (from which lead me directly to a "You've followed a link to a page that doesn't exist yet" page.

Wikifur itself was in essence, asking for someone to create the definition for the missing reference link.

While "fourth wall" is used by many furry authors, it nonetheless is a concept that is not in and of itself related *only* to furry venues. Thus I wrote the *requested* article in a neutral fashion, mentioning other non-furry venues for the sake of "concept completeness". Wikifur articles are read by many young people and we have the obligation to ensure that we shape their young minds properly. After all, the tween reading the site today may LEARN many valuable concepts they will incorporate in future artistic creations, be they cartoon strips, or stage productions, or even Big and Small Screen movies, and "fourth wall" is one of the valuable tools they need to learn about. How great would it be for a future "Steven Speilberg" to relate that he learned many of his great blockbuster concepts from Wikifur!!

Again, I mention that I stepped up to the plate and created the article *only* because wikifur (at the above referenced article) had a missing link and requested *someone* to provide the definition.

You know had I created from scratch an article, say, about the Caitian race(which *is* an article) from Star Trek because they are cat-like humanoids first seen in the person of Lt M'Ress on the Animated Series and therefore they belong on a furry/anthro site... I could definately see the resoning that it is in fact *not* furry-related. However that is not the case here.

I hope that you will reconsider this determination and reverse your decision.

I think the problem is, although furry writers/cartoonists may use or break the Fourth Wall, there is nothing uniquely furry about the concept, nor is the Fourth Wall used in any unusual way by furry authors. Hence it isn't really an appropriate topic for a furry encyclopaedia, when we can link to other resources (such as wikipedia) which already adequately cover it.--Higgs Raccoon 16:42, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Ah! But you *didn't*.. the referenced missing hyperlink *asked* for input and I provided it... If Wikifur doesn't want people stepping up to fill in asked for information, there shouldn't be dead links which lead you right to a page to create it.

First, no decision has been made. The {{Appropriate}} tag is only meant as a "nomination" to be considered before any action is taken.
The notion that "Wikifur was requesting creation of this article" is rather dubious considering anyone can edit almost any article, and could link any name, word, phrase, or concept in an article. The admins and other regular editors will generally clean up the more obvious instances of unnecessary or inappropriate links, but we don't always catch or fix them all, especially in cases like the one in the Badly Drawn Kitties article which was at least semi-plausible. If a non-existent article had links from several different articles, that statement would carry more weight, but since it was only one I wouldn't view that as a reliable indication that an article was needed. And in this case if I had found that particular link, I probably would have changed it to link to the Wikipedia article.
On any subject that exists outside of furry fandom and would be covered by an article such as in this case the Wikipedia article, the article in Wikifur should reflect some usage or angle of the subject matter that is specific to furry that goes beyond what one would find in a non-furry source. If there is no additional furry angle to speak of, there probably doesn't need to be a WikiFur article. I recall this coming up in a recent discussion about whether WikiFur should have an article about evolution.
Finally, I'm getting a sense that you invested time and effort into creating this article and feel compelled to defend it. It is a fact of life in wikimedia that material you contribute will be subject to revision and sometimes deletion by other participants. It's actually much worse on Wikipedia; at least here on WikiFur we try to be more relaxed and friendly about it; nevertheless we do try to maintain a fair degree of consistency and editorial standards in the articles on the site. And we do appreciate your efforts and hope you will continue to contribute to the site, regardless of what happens with this article. --mwalimu 16:56, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey, ZZS! I saw your comment appear and disappear, so I fixed the red link - it was a duplicate anyway. Just because a link points to an empty page doesn't mean the page must be created. And for all your complaining, you yourself could have made that very simple edit to Badly Drawn Kitties. -- Siege(talk) 05:14, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Seige.. I dropped the last comment because just before I made it the link was still broken, and then before I could send it was fixed...

As for doing it myself, that assumes I know how to make links and such, which I don't.... I'm only a working-skunk you know... LOL, I'm not Sabrina... Zig Zag Studios 03:19, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
