For me, and many others who joined in the early 1990s, it was the only source to get furry art. I remember a controversy over mirror sites and CDs with "all of avatar" reproduced and distributed in small quantities (for those with slow FTP connections), as not all artists agreed to be distributed that way.

Does Furnation (or anywhere else) still host an Avatar mirror?

They took that down a long time ago, if there was a site closing of Avatar, I completely missed it, which is why I put "quiet death". I remembered it slowing way down as far as updates, you'd get like a few dozen pictures a month for a long time, so I stopped checking it. RIP Avatar, you were THE SITE back in the day, this ones for my homies!

What's with all the hate on FTP? It's not like every FTP client had a command-line interface, even in the 90s. There are HTTP clients that suck that much too, if you want to use them. Anyway, it looks like all the Avatar mirrors are gone, tragically. --67.169.224.231 04:11, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

Most of that part seemed to be an explanation of how to use a generic command-line FTP client and how anonymous FTP works, which is probably covered well enough in the linked Wikipedia article on FTP. I tightened that section up considerably --Riismo 05:17, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
