A smilodon, also known as a saber-toothed cat or saber-toothed tiger, is an extinct genus of felines of the subfamily Machairodontinae whose most notable feature is their exceptionally long upper canines.

Overview[edit]

Smilodons are believed to have been native to the Americas until as recently as the end of the last ice age, or about 10,000 years ago. There were multiple species of smilodons, the largest of which were as large, or larger, than present-time tigers.[1][2]

Smilodon and furry[edit]

Smilodons are the most common species of all extinct felines used in furry fandom's lore and art, due in part solely to the above-mentioned, trademarked large upper canines.
