Zig Zag plush (SFW)
A giant stuffed bunny plush being built for the (now late) fursuiter and plushie collector, Trigger Happy Squirrel .

A plush toy, or just plush (pl. plushes), better known as a plushie, as a furspeech term, it is an identifier for a stuffed furry character or doll with an outer fabric sewn from a textile and stuffed with flexible material

Plush in mainstream culture[edit]

Initially made out of rags and straw for the poorer children of Ancient Rome, or rags, wood wool, or cotton for Ancient Egyptian kids, the initial plush version dates back to the 1880s.[1] Known plushies include the Teddy bear, Sock monkeys, Tickle Me Elmo and/or Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit stuffed toy (the first one to be patented).

Construction and themes[edit]

Modern stuffed toys are commonly constructed of outer fabrics such as plain cloth, pile textiles like plush, fur or sometimes socks. Common stuffing materials include synthetic fiber, batting, cotton, straw, wood wool, plastic pellets, and/or beans. Some modern toys incorporate technology to move and interact with the user (i.e. Teddy Ruxpin).

They are usually made in the shape of something cute, usually animals, especially bears, mammalian pets such as cats and dogs, and highly recognizable animals such as zebras, tigers, pandas, lizards, and elephants. Many fictional]animal-like characters from movies, TV shows, books, or other entertainment forms often appear in stuffed toy versions.

Plush and furry[edit]

Plushies are a perennial favorite of most furries in the furry fandom. Plush devotees may call themselves plushophiles, while gothfurs have coined the term Gundie as another word for "plushie", deriving from GUND, a manufacturer of plush toys.[citation needed]

Plush favorites include Meeko, from Walt Disney's Pocahontas eature animation, and the Zig Zag plush, a fan-created product created for the furry company, Furry Dakimakura.

  • A plush pile is a decoration arrangement of bundled plushies in someone's room, studio, or at events.
  • The sexual affinity or paraphilia for plush toys is called plushophilia, even though the definition may be not 100% sexual.
  • Plush-like latex character toys (sometimes known as pool toys in the fandom), is a different furry toy subgenre not really related to "plush" (fabric).
