Mobius is the setting used in the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon and comic books. Among the furry fandom, Mobius is popular as a generic post-apocalyptic furry setting. The continuity of Mobius began in the version of the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon known in the Sonic fandom as SatAM, originally named in The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon and was continued and expanded (and heavily retconned) by the Archie comic. Due to the flexibility of the setting, it is fairly popular among furries, and has developed a fandom of its own. Most modern Sonic media refer to the planet as Earth, but the dominant species is uncertain as the world is populated by humans in most of the media in the 2000s but has been changed to be a world of anthropomorphic animals in the more recent games.

In the Archie Comics[edit]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic produced by Archie, Mobius's calendar year is around 3237. The world is inhabited by a combination of anthropomorphs and humans, notable examples being the Freedom Fighters, which is a team of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sally Acorn and various other anthropomorphic animals, and Dr. Eggman, a mad scientist bent on world domination. Dr. Eggman is constantly thwarted by Sonic the Hedgehog in his plans for world domination. This form of Mobius resembles a polluted Earth.

In the SatAM Cartoon[edit]

Mobius is a planet mostly inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, with an exception of Dr. Robotnik, a scientist bent on destroying the Freedom Fighters and governing roboticized animals. Dr. Robotnik, then known as Julian, was on a space expedition when a nuclear holocaust destroyed all human life. The remaining animals mutated and built upon the society left by people. Upon his return, Dr. Robotnik and his assistant Snively felt they should be in charge or all the formerly four-legged critters. This Mobius has a combination of polluted cities and beautiful forests.

In the furry fandom[edit]

For furries, Mobius is a generic setting, usable for any style of stories; the juxtaposition of large untamed wildernesses and modern societies, magic and technology, enlightenment and the unknown, make for a setting that can encompass a wide variety of stories and genres within it.

Fanwritten stories set in Mobius infrequently centre around the Robotnik-Freedom Fighters storyline, and are either set in the peaceful times before or in the foreseen reconstruction after.
