[edit] Background

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

After the world of Felis was turned into a massive, planet-wide factory for the Avanguard, most of the indigenous population moved off to other worlds. Some of them however, decided to stay close to their homeworld, and constructed the Orbital Habdome in which to live. Ken Basal was one such who grew up aboard the ‘dome.

His father was a mercenary, and his mother died when he was very young. As a result, young Ken grew up with a strong affinity for space and the many wild adventures that lay beyond. His schooling was haphazard at best but he excelled at everything, so determined was he to make it behind the controls of his own starship to flit about the galaxy as he saw fit. He certainly aced his computer and navigation classes.

Unfortunately, Ken’s father was killed while he was still in school, cutting his education rather short. Bailing out, the tiger used his knowledge of computer systems to track down the group that killed his father. Slicing records, he was able to find the group, and flying in his father’s old ship, destroyed them all.

For about ten years, he kept a low profile as a quiet, but respected mercenary. After seeing the way the Avanguard were cracking down on the galaxy’s fringe though, he decided to give it up and go straight, as an Avanguard fighter pilot. They accepted him readily, after demonstrating his exceptional piloting skills and computer abilities.

After he completed pilot training, Ken was assigned to a black-ops division of the Avanguard. Half of his squadron were also trained as ground agents, creating an effective infiltration unit for covert strikes. The squadron’s top pilots were, on those missions, entrusted with the prototype Talon starfighter, capable of initiating a cloaking shield to hide from scanners and sight.

Ken was an integral part of the mass desertion Sol pioneered over Vaalis. Slicing into Avanguard records using top-level codes he ‘acquired’, the tiger was successful in drawing their fleet groups together for their raid and subsequent escape. Though modest, he is often credited by Sol as the one who did the most for their escape, both during the fight and before it.

Before Jaime arrived at Sol’s Nest Ken took on the role of intelligence officer, planning what convoys to hit and where. His strikes were almost perfectly planned, all but one. Ken was killed in an Avanguard ambush, his fighter rammed by an Avanguard-piloted J-4 fighter. The remains of his Talon were taken back by Sol, and she lets no one work on the fighter, save herself.
