Iron Author is a competition held at many furry conventions to write the worst furry fiction possible in under 24 hours. The authors are given a theme to work with, often inspired by the theme of the convention, as well as a few other basic rules.[clarify]

Generally, a panel of three judges picks out the worst of the worst, and the next day, the "worst offenders" are called to read their stories as part of another panel. Jokingly, attendees are told[citation needed] there are no winners, as all the stories are (intentionally) horrible.
