J.C. Tabler is the son of an attorney and former schoolteacher. Born in Kentucky, he has remained in the area his entire life except for various visits abroad.
His younger years were spent reading, writing, and playing on computers. After playing football for Dupont Manual Magnet High School, he attended college at the University of Kentucky, dropping out after his first year to take a job working on the historical steamer Belle of Louisville for a number of years before returning to college, first at the University of Kentucky and then at the University of Louisville.
In February of 2008 he was married in a small ceremony with only his family present. In May of 2008 he graduated from the University of Louisville with a Bachelor of Arts in History.
