Cockroaches (or simply "roaches") are omnivorous insects of the Order Blattodea, found in every region of the world except for the polar regions. In popular culture, cockroaches are often regarded as vile and extremely resilient pests, due to their shiny exoskeletons (making them look slimy, contrary to their fastidious habits), and their size, unusual for a scavenging insect. In the furry fandom, cockroach fursonas are rare, the most notable one being Anthrocon chairman Uncle Kage. The cockroach (and similar insects) are common subjects of transformation stories inspired by the novel The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, in which a salesman wakes up one morning transformed into a cockroach.
