Category talk:Regional groups

I'm requesting (further) discussion on categories for members of regional groups. There's been a bit of discussion at Category talk:LAFFurs, and some related at User_talk:Pathia after I jumped the gun on deleting a category named SOAP Members. -- Sine 00:32, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

I guess my first question is, why are regional groups not allowed anyway in the first place?Pathia 01:31, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

I can't speak for Mwalimu, who left a comment against the idea of such categories on Category talk:LAFFurs, but as far as my own thoughts go, I think that categories for membership in regional groups are essentially redundant in view of location categories (see Category:Geography for the top level of those). Generally, someone who's a member of a regional group will be located in that area. -- Sine 02:49, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

That feels false to me on multiple reasons. There are usually multiple groups in regions, especially the highly populous ones. One is not always a member of ALL of them or any of them for that matter, which is what you are implying here. Most 'regional' groups also seem to consider all people who have ever been a member to still be a member, even if they are no longer located where the group happens to be. I think that a list of members in the relevant article (or in a sub article) would be far more useful than a category as you can add members who do not have an article or have been excluded, and you could also add notations and easily break the list up into headings (e.g. current/past members), which would otherwise require subcategories. I just want to add -- the LAFF group used to have it's own wiki homepage, but was lost due to a crash. It was rebuilt but will likely never be completed like before all was lost. The homepage [1] now has a link to which is basically a replacement member's directory. It serves a purpose to connect members and also attracts people to wikifur who may discover it through finding LAFF. Which other categories on wikifur attract new members? I'm typing this right now because that link sparked my interest to check out Wikifur again and update my profile here. ArtySkox
