Bugs Bunny is a rabbit character created and developed by a number of directors at Warner Bros. animation. Named after director Ben "Bugs" Hardaway, who directed Porky's Hare Hunt (1938), his first appearance as "Bugs" was in the Merrie Melodies cartoon A Wild Hare (1940). Bugs has since become Warner Bros.' official mascot, not to mention one of the best known cartoon characters in the world. He, along with Mickey Mouse, is one of the first cartoon characters to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2002, TV Guide compiled a list of the 50 greatest cartoon characters of all time as part of the magazine's 50th anniversary. Bugs Bunny was given the honor of number 1,[1] however, he was beaten out by rival Mickey Mouse, as well as Toto, in Animal Planet's The 50 Greatest Movie Animals.
