The bony core of the beak is a lightweight framework.

The beak, also known as bill or rostrum, is an external anatomical structure of birds which, in addition to eating, is used for grooming, manipulating objects, killing prey, probing for food, courtship, and feeding their young. Beaks are covered with a sheath of keratin, which grows continuously.

The term also refers to a similar mouthpart in some cephalopods, cetaceans, pufferfish, turtles, Anuran tadpoles, and sirens. Some dragons and dinosaurs have also been portrayed as having them.
