BDSM is a term for "Bondage/Discipline,Domination/Submission and Sadism/Masochism". This refers to four distinct paraphilias.
- Bondage is sexual conduct in which one or more individuals are bound by restrictive devices such as handcuffs, leather harnesses, and chains. This is usually accompanied by dominance.
- Dominance in sexual conduct involves one or more people taking a dominant role over another by giving them orders or taking the role of the aggressor during sexual intercourse. One subcategory of this is the practice of female dominance (or femdom).
- Sexual Sadism is the sexual pleasure in the infliction of pain and suffering upon another person.
- Sexual Masochism is the sexual pleasure from inflicting pain on oneself or having others inflict pain on oneself.
BDSM refers to the aggregation of all six behaviors at once. Typically masochists partner up with sadists who bind them, dominate them, and administer pain in the form of spankings, tight restraints, or rough sexual play. While people engaged in BDSM may appear as if one person is raping another, this is a consensual sexual activity. Usually, practitioners of BDSM choose a 'safeword' (or some non-verbal sign) which would not normally be said during sexual activities to indicate an immediate stop of all BDSM so no one is severely hurt, since often masochists will scream or groan in pain during BDSM as a normal part of the experience.
BDSM may be practiced in online TinySex, or in real life. BDSM is a paraphilia nonspecific to the Furry Fandom, but some furries practice BDSM in a furry roleplaying context. Tapestries MUCK was founded specifically as a safe place for such roleplay.
BDSM themes are common in furry art and fiction. BondoFox's website has a large collection of mostly female furry bondage art. Trouble's Tales and The Journal Entries of Kennet R'yal Shardik are but two of the better known story series that rely heavily on BDSM scenes.
