Anthro Weekend Utah (AWU) is the largest[1] furry convention in Utah, organized by a nonprofit of the same name. Founded in 2017, it has taken place at the Davis Conference Center in Layton since 2018.

AWU's mascots are Arc, a coyote, and Carver, a bear.[2]

Origin[edit]

The concept of Anthro Weekend Utah was dreamed up by furs Bexis, Rocky and Giga in early 2016. However, it wasn't until later that year that Giga revived the idea of a convention with Bexis and Rocky, this time bringing in a few others - Talon, JoJo, and Charcoal - and began planning what would soon become Anthro Weekend Utah.

Yearly History[edit]

2017: Legalize "AWU"[edit]

Anthro Weekend Utah's inaugural event was held October 27-28, 2017 at the Radisson Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah. The theme this year was "Legalize AWU!", building on the popular "Don't Awoo: $350 Fine" meme. The official attendee count was 457. AWU hosted Tayerr (aka AlbinoTopaz) and artist RUdragon as Guests of Honor.

2018: Bark to the 80's![edit]

AWU 2018 was held on August 10-12, 2018, this time at the Davis Conference Center in Layton, Utah in order to accommodate future growth. The theme, announced at the closing ceremonies of the 2017 convention, was "Bark to the 80's", and was based around 80's pop-culture (with its own furry spin). This year's Guests of Honor were Silvixen,[3], an Australian artist, and Atlas Inu.[4] The official attendee count was 603,[5] including 200 fursuiters.[6] Attendees praised the larger convention center.[citation needed]

2019: Furlock Holmes[edit]

Originally scheduled for July 26-28,[7] AWU announced on September 21, 2018 that to better work with neighboring conventions (as well as their venue), the dates for their third year were to be July 19-21, 2019.[8] The convention was once again held at the Davis Conference Center. At AWU 2018's closing ceremony, the theme was announced to be "Furlock Holmes".[9] They were joined by guests of honor Ritwells[10] and Injured Songbird.[11] They also revealed a special appearance by Fox Amoore and Pepper Coyote.[12] Final attendee count for the year was 913.[13] Additionally, attendees donated a total of $2,677.58 to their official charity, Wild Wonders.[13]

2022: The Curse of AWUbis[edit]

AWU announced their 2020 theme on July 21, 2019 - Arc E. Ologist and Carver Bones in "The Curse of AWUbis".[13] The convention would be held again at the DCC, on July 17-19, 2020.[14] However, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 convention and theme was postponed twice, to July 16-18, 2021[15] and then again to July 15-17, 2022.[16] The guests of honor were Titus Weiss[17] and Weremagnus.[18] The offical attendee count was 1,453, and $10,716.26 was raised for the charity Wild Wonders.[19]

2023: James B'arc: Double-AWU-Seven[edit]

AWU 2023, 'James B'arc: Double-AWU-Seven', was held on July 14-16, 2023, with special Guests of Honor VulpesVant[20], Ribbontini[21], and Nicholas Kole[22]. There were 1,828 in attendance this year, and thanks to a charity auction, a charity casino night, and the efforts of U2F2 and Furry Logic Escape Rooms, a grand total of $26,572.11 was raised for Wild Wonders[23], to assist in rehoming their animals as they wound down.

2024: YAPerture Science[edit]

As announced at the 2023 closing ceremonies, AWU 2024 will be held July 19-21, 2024, with the theme of "YAPerture Science!"[23]
