Al Fago
Al Fago is a humor cartoonist who was known for his many classic funny animal comic books. He was born in 1904 to an Italian immigrant family that arrived from Naples in 1890.
In the early '20s, Fago worked in the design department of the Alexander Smith Rug Company after studying in a trade school.
During World War II, Fago worked alongside his younger brother Vince on titles such as Krazy Comics. He became recognized in the industry for his work on Frisky Fables, which he produced for various publishers in the late '40s. His longest-running hit Atomic Mouse was published from 1953 to 1963 by Charlton Comics, where he also became the managing editor. In 1955, he spun off another superhero character Atomic Rabbit. When Harvey Comics' Casper the Friendly Ghost became popular enough to inspire imitations from rival studios, Fago created Timmy the Timid Ghost for Charlton in 1956. The series sold respectably enough to continue through 1964. However, Fago became dissatisfied with his work at Charlton and left to set up his own imprint at St. John Publications.
